Single Point Load Cells

Single point load cells are the go-to choice for compact, low- to mid-capacity weighing systems such as bench scales, packaging machines, checkweighers, and small conveyor platforms. Unlike other designs, a properly sized single point cell is designed to weigh accurately even when the load is off-center, which makes it ideal for dynamic or uneven loading.
At American Scale Supply, we stock Rice Lake and Coti Global single point load cells in aluminum and stainless steel, with capacities from a few kilograms up to 1,000 kg and IP ratings up to IP69K for harsh washdown environments.
Single point load cells are best for:
-
Bench and table-top scales
-
Packaging and checkweigher systems
-
Small hoppers and vibratory feeders
-
OEM scale manufacturing and retrofits

How to Choose the Right Single Point Load Cell
1. Capacity
Choose a load cell with 125–150% of your maximum expected load to handle movement and overload.
For dynamic or high-impact applications (conveyors, vibratory feeders), consider a higher safety margin.
2. Material & Environment
Aluminum: Great for dry, clean industrial environments and OEM bench scales.
Stainless steel: Best for washdown, food, chemical, or outdoor use.
3. IP Rating & Sealing
IP65–IP67: Splash and dust protection for most dry/indoor applications.
IP69K / hermetically sealed: Required for high-pressure washdown or very harsh environments.
4. Certification
If the scale is used for Legal-for-Trade applications, choose NTEP-certified models where available.
5. Mounting Footprint
Match the load cell’s bolt pattern and platform size to your scale base or OEM design.
When replacing an existing cell, use the same or compatible footprint whenever possible.
📍 Single-Point Load Cell FAQ
What is a single-point load cell?
A single-point load cell is a precision sensor that measures weight or force using only one load introduction point. It is engineered to maintain accuracy even when the load is off-center, making it ideal for small platforms, packaging machines, and bench scales.
When should I choose a single-point load cell instead of a shear beam or S-beam?
Choose a single-point cell when:
The platform is small (typically under 24" x 24")
The load may not be perfectly centered
You need a compact, cost-efficient design
For larger platforms, hopper tanks, or suspended weighing, other load cell types may be better suited. How do I select the right capacity?
Start with your maximum expected load and add 25–50% safety margin for shock, motion, or dynamic loading. If you expect frequent impact (e.g., conveyors, vibratory feeders), choose the next capacity up to extend service life.
What material should I choose — aluminum or stainless steel?
Aluminum: Light, economical, ideal for clean indoor environments
Stainless steel: Best for washdown, food processing, chemical exposure, or outdoor use
If moisture, cleaners, or corrosives are involved → go stainless steel.Do I need an IP67 or IP69K sealed load cell?
IP65–IP67: Splash-resistant; suitable for most industrial use
IP69K: Designed for high-pressure steam/hot water washdown
If you're in food, dairy, meat, or pharmaceutical — IP69K is recommended or required. Are single-point load cells Legal-for-Trade?
Some models and capacities are NTEP Certified for commercial use. Look for “NTEP Certified” in the title or specifications. Certification applies to the system, but using a compliant load cell is necessary for approval.
